Talks

Convened by
Elena Guzman Miasarah Lai

This workshop offers fundamental strategies for anti-racist documentary storytelling from concept to production. The need for anti-racist filmmaking has reverberated throughout the film industry with viral calls to action such as #OscarsSoWhite and #DecolonizeDocs. Media makers of colour continue to demand that filmmakers, funders, and the industry recognize the ongoing racist practices that prevent different voices and perspectives. This pre-recorded session covers practical anti-racist techniques and considerations for different stages of the filmmaking process, including development, lighting, cinematography, and interview techniques. During the live Q&A session, select participants will have a chance to workshop their projects. This workshop will be co-facilitated by organizers of Ethnocine Collective: Elena Guzman, filmmaker and Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Studies and Anthropology at Haverford College, and Miasarah Lai, Documentary Filmmaker and Community Manager of Brown Girls Doc Mafia.
