Rhythm, Art, Poetry and Life

Directed by Lutegardo Lampiao

2018 – 10'

Synopsis

Four Mozambican women want to start a female revolution through their music and named their band after this dream. Living in the capital of Mozambique, the four members of ‘Revolucao Feminina’ use their art, rhythm and poetry to challenge young, urban women in Maputo to follow their dreams and believe in themselves. Their music encourages all Mozambicans, young and old, men and women, to support and encourage the new generation of Mozambican women to find their voice. The film-makers three young Mozambican men, worked with the artists to produce this audio-visual portrait of the quartet as they set out and begin the journey to realise their dream: to expand the feminine revolution in the country, on the African continent and in the outside world.

Part of a series of films called “Fala Minha Irma” (Speak My Sister) produced by Karen Boswall, in partnership with students from the Higher Institute of Art and Culture in Maputo, Mozambique. The theme was decided collaboratively with the students who wanted to represent the positive, dynamic and inspirational side of Mozambican women and not the suffering and victimization so often portrayed in films made by foreign film-makers for an international audience. They want to shine a light on a Mozambican response to the extreme gender inequality in their country, the lack of opportunities for girls and women, the early pregnancy and marriage, the sexual violence and domestic abuse, is not through lament, but through positive action. All the women portrayed in the films in this series have drawn on their creative voice to bring about change. Their vision; through sharing these stories through mobile screenings in schools, streets, squares, in villages and towns across Mozambique, that more women and girls will find their own voice and speak, sing or dance out about things that matter to them, and together wake people up to change.
