The second of three films about the Evenki people of eastern Siberia. Focuses on Nikolaj Pavlovich Archemku, who experienced the very beginning of Soviet power, two World Wars, and the collectivisation of reindeer husbandry, as well as the recent economic and political changes in Russia. He lost a leg and his children in the last war, and later adopted Vasha, the son of a relative, to whom he is passing on his traditional skills of reindeer husbandry and survival in the harsh taiga.
