Recorded during two years but organized around a single day, “Promenade” observes a series of movements and interactions on a renovated section of the Marseille waterfront. During the day a cast of itinerant vendors, swimmers, fishermen, and other locals circle around the esplanade’s new visitors and buildings, eventually reclaiming the space at night. The film’s fixed perspective attempts to establish equality between the perspectives of past and present users, as well as those city planners and architects who conceptualize such spaces through the form of scale renderings, which the film deliberately imitates in its compositions.
