Where photography would be inappropriate, these sketches are intended to be ‘expressive on an emotional as well as on an almost banal documentary level.’
They depict domestic migrant workers carrying out everyday tasks, and comment on how the construction of ‘cultural difference’ as part of a process of racializing gender (A Brah) has resulted in differing access to spaces and places (even in a domestic sphere), based on nationality or skin colour.
There has been an increase in protests for domestic migrant worker rights in Lebanon (led by the women themselves). These have taken place in very public spaces. If I were to redo the project I would also like to add a third sketch, capturing them in this light, and perhaps an exploration into the cracks in the hegemony that have led to these uprisings.
