Confronted with racism at an early age, she was sustained by a strong sense of belonging to the African diaspora throughout her many campaigns for the rights of black people, both at home and abroad. She was also highly active in campaigning for women's rights as well as in the promotion of many different educational and cultural activities, including the formation of Moss Side's celebrated Abasindi women's dance group.
