The Poem’s title is from the Zimbabwean language of Shona and can be translated as: ‘Come on, Chipo’. This poem details a conversation between a black Zimbabwean girl, Chipo (meaning ‘gift’ in Shona) and her black Zimbabwean aunt. The poem seeks to convey the reality of the coloniality of power in today’s global economic, social and political context. The naïve attitude of Chipo, as evident in her ignorance of the socio-economic implications of her marriage to a black man, is juxtaposed with the more pragmatic attitude of her aunt who is cognisant of the benefits of white privilege.
